Admittedly, the technology behind Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Project Natal is not new. It can be seen in use with Nintendo in the Wii and, before that, it existed briefly in the form of Sony’s EyeToy. However, what is special about Project Natal is that the technology is superior to anything else that has ever been seen before.

The gaming industry is filled with excitement about Natal and, most importantly, it is game developers and creators that are most enthusiastic. Tellingly, this suggests, in a way that is more reliable than consumer anticipation, that Project Natal will be one of the biggest things to happen to gaming in a very long time. In fact, Hideo Kojima, the legendry creator of Metal Gear Solid, likens his excitement over Natal to his excitement after playing the first Family Computer.

Therefore, it is not an exaggeration to say that Project Natal will ensure that gaming is never the same again.

But, what makes it so different to EyeToy or Wii? Well, as already mentioned, the key to Natal’s success is the advancement in motion-sensory technology, meaning that whole body, face and even facial expression interface can be used. Additionally, the system responds to voice commands, can recognize a specific voice in a room full of others and, more importantly, it can successfully create a two-way conversation between an onscreen character and a player. All things that would have been unimaginable just a few years ago.

The camera used by Project Natal is also key to its success. Natal employs a camera that identifies signals from the infrared spectrum only. In layman’s terms, this means that a game can be played in any kind of light. Even more amazingly, the camera identifies objects in your room, such as furniture, and can adapt the playing area to fit the space available.

This technology is the stuff of science fiction and, understandably, it has the gaming world abuzz with excitement.
