The Revolutionary Technology of Microsoft’s Natal

In recent months, you have probably heard a buzz in the gaming world about Xbox 360 Project Natal, Microsoft’s latest unveiling. It consists of motion-sensing technology that looks set to revolutionize the industry and perhaps even supersede the Nintendo Wii.

Now, you may be thinking, “Motion-sensory technology isn’t revolutionary, so what has Microsoft done that’s so special?” It’s true motion-sensory technology is not new. Nintendo first demonstrated the wonders of the Wii back in 2006. However, Project Natal is very different to the Wii, because it does not require the use of a controller.

Technically, that has been done before too, with Sony’s EyeToy. However, the EyeToy did not take off, due to a lack of good games and, more importantly, a lack of ability to follow a player’s movements accurately.

This is where Microsoft’s Natal really is revolutionary. Never before has a motion-sensor application been so accurate or technically advanced. The camera used by Project Natal picks up signals from the infrared spectrum, which means that the camera will work in any light. Moreover, a really interesting facet of Natal is that the system can construct the area of play around furniture, walls or other obstacles in your living room, which means you will not have to hurdle your couch in over zealous play.

One of the most important indicators of the significance of Microsoft’s developments is the reaction from the gaming community at large, which is palpable with excitement.

Importantly for Microsoft, they already have several highly respected game developers onboard, so quality of games should not be a problem. Therefore, it is reasonable to surmise that Project Natal will be incredibly popular. In fact, it looks set to eclipse the Wii entirely.
