natal interface Microsoft’s Natal Whole Body Interface TechnologyThere is a real sense of expectation amongst those in the gaming community. A feeling that we are on the cusp of something quite extraordinary that will change the face of gaming forever.

Obviously, the technology that has made gesture, body and even facial expression interface possible can be seen in both Nintendo Wii and Sony EyeToy. However, it could be argued that it is merely in its embryonic stages in the Nintendo Wii. The fact is, the Nintendo Wii is incredibly popular and gamers are still very impressed by the gameplay that it offers. Therefore, it is difficult to envisage a system that is vastly superior.

However, hang on to your hats, because Xbox 360 Project Natal is, indeed, a system that can supply extraordinary gameplay opportunities to its users. It offers players gesture interface, without the need for a Wiimote, or any controller for that matter. Additionally, facial expression and recognition interface is something that would have been thought of as an inconceivable aspect of home gaming just a few years ago.

Interestingly, the whole body interface technology used by Project Natal is supplied courtesy of a sophisticated camera that only picks up signals from the infrared spectrum. This may seem like technical jargon, but it means that gamers can play Natal games in any lighting condition and rooms of any size, because the camera can adapt the gameplay to coincide with the conditions of your living room.

Understandably, game developers are extremely excited by the possibilities that this technology presents. Concepts that had previously been considered impossible are soon to become a reality. Xbox 360 Natal looks set to make the Nintendo Wii look like a pit stop on the road to whole body interface technology.
